Wheatgrass juice and cancer - Response to Choice magazine

“Wheatgrass helps prevent and can cure cancer”

"Verdict: Inconclusive evidence for prevention – none for cure.
• Test tube and animal studies have shown that wheatgrass extract works against gene mutations, but there’s no certainty that the same effect would happen in humans..."

Where does this information come from?
"...• Previously it was speculated that this effect was due to wheatgrass
containing chlorophyll..."
Where does this information come from?
"...but more recently it’s been proposed that it’s a result of the antioxidant
activity of the flavonoids it contains..."
Where does this information come from?
"...Flavonoids are a group of naturally occurring compounds found in many
fruits and vegetables, and there’s evidence that eating fruit and vegetables can help reduce the risk of cancer. But you can’t automatically draw the conclusion that drinking wheatgrass juice will also contribute towards this protective effect, as the laboratory studies were performed on an extract of wheatgrass, not wheatgrass juice itself."
Where does this information come from?
"• There’s nothing to substantiate claims that wheatgrass can help ‘dissolve
tumours’. This type of claim could be dangerous if someone were to substitute wheatgrass juice for their regular treatment."

Our Comments - Wheatgrass juice and cancer

There have been a number of research trials into the use of various components of cereal grasses as both an antimutagenic agent and inhibitory agent against various cancers.
Here are some trials and research that we have provided.

Note: Some of the below studies and trials have been done using barley grass. Please read “Wheatgrass verses Barley grass” to find out why we have included them.

Conclusion - Wheatgrass juice and cancer:

In the number of trials and research summaries we refer to, wheatgrass is NEVER stated to be a cure all for cancer, and anyone who does state this is WRONG.

Wheatgrass and other cereal grasses, however, have been shown to have antimutagenic, and inhibitory effects against various cancers. This is one area in which it would be very useful to have more research undertaken. However, given the amount of money that is being made by pharmaceutical companies through cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, and the difficulty the pharmaceutical industry would find in patenting grass, it is unlikely that the medical industry will undertake such research.
